Bill Coldstream Remembered: Portraits of a Painter is a collection of essays and shorter reminiscent pieces reflecting on the life and legacy of William Coldstream (1908-1987) by a wide range of those who knew and learned from him, whether by direct contact or through his work. Coldstream, known as Bill to his friends, and The Prof to generations of students at The Slade where he was Professor of Fine Art from 1949-1975, was a founder member of the Euston Road School, a mover and shaker at the GPO Film Unit, where he worked closely with Britten and Auden in the 1930s, and later a major figure in the London art world as it went through controversial changes from the 1960s onwards. In this collection he is remembered as much for his hilarity, humanity, and gift for friendship as for the lasting mark he made on the cultural landscape of a world in flux. In a delightfully diverse selection of studies and characteristic snapshots Bill emerges as a complex figure, a man of warmth and wit, a painter of obsessive rigour, a raconteur, and a champion of the underdog. Born into a working-class family in London's Battersea, David Gommon first studied art at the local Polytechnic when he was sixteen. Aged nineteen, he was taken up by Lucy Carrington Wertheim - the London-based gallerist renowned for adventurously showing work by Christopher Wood, Frances Hodgkins and gifted naive artists - who gave him his first exhibition. Aided by insights from the artist's own evocative writings, Philip Vann's text intricately examines the development of Gommon's predominantly landscape art – infused with mystical delicacy of colour and subtle audacity of composition that often tends towards surrealism – rooted latterly in the paradisical surroundings of the Northamptonshire village of Hardingstone where he and his wife Jean lived for several decades.

This portrait of Santa Isabel in over 600 pictures shows an island transformed by its colonial history yet maintaining a confident and distinctive identity within Solomon Islands and the Pacific Island region.Santa Isabel is one of the largest islands that make up the island nation of Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific. Politically it is now one of nine provinces, each with its own variation of a shared history. In a country divided among many Christian denominations, Isabel is distinctive for its early acceptance of the Anglican Church, which united most of the island and its six language groups by the 1920s and then shaped its history up to the present.This book traces Santa Isabel history through a selection of the many hundreds of pictures of the island made first by Europeans and increasingly by its own people. These begin with the drawings and paintings of voyagers from the late 18th century, gradually succeeded by photos from the 1860s onwards showing the arrival of missionaries, traders and warships. From the 1900s there are photos made by the Europeans who established plantations on Isabel and colonial officers asserting British colonial authority. However, the pictorial record is dominated by photos from the Anglican Melanesian Mission. The Second World War, portrayed mainly by military photos, was followed closely by economic and political developments leading up to Solomon Islands independence in 1978 – developments portrayed in both church and government photos. Photos of more recent social, ceremonial and political activities show the unique combination of church, chiefs and local government in Isabel life. A renewed interest in local culture in the 21st century is revealed through photos of festivals and cultural research by both visiting and local researchers as Isabel people explore the possibilities of tourism, resource extraction and environmental conservation.

How copyright shapes the nature, value, and meaning of musical creativityCopyright Consciousness explores the mutual influence of intellectual property law, musical creativity, and state cultural policy in Turkey's vibrant music industry. Drawing on ethnographic and archival data from the past five decades, this book is among the first in-depth ethnographies of music and the law. Adapting theories of legal consciousness and introducing them into ethnomusicology, it documents how a broad range of actors, from courts to composers, negotiate and constitute an emergent legality in music. It tracks how these actors make sense of and respond to the music copyright system's purported failures and perceived injustices, often integrating their experiences into larger narratives about Turkish society, the nature and value of musical creativity, and the histories of national genres, especially folk music.

Over the last 30 years, the Chinese system of art museums has enjoyed an unprecedented pace of development. Following a general and ongoing renovation of China’s entire system of national art institutions, there has been an impressive proliferation of meishuguan (art museums) all over in the country. Many different types of institutional statuses for art museums have recently been launched (notably small, private art museums) while others have developed rapidly (especially state-owned museums). This volume explores this range of different approaches to exhibiting and curating art, while also investigating the crucial question of the cultural sustainability of art museums in China. Through four case studies on museums and art collections in the cities of Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Shanghai, this volume provides an important contribution to the debate on the past, present and future of art museums in contemporary China.

The last few years have seen a growing interest in the conservation and enhancement of the working and living spaces of the faber: artists, designers and architects. They include both museums and private places that are waiting for fulfilling their full potential. John Bellany was one of the most significant Northern European Expressionists of the modern era. As with all expressionists his art is highly subjective and autobiographical and his self-portraits range from carefully observed student studies to disguising himself in different roles within his epic pictorial narratives.This book concentrates on the role of self-portraiture in Bellany’s art to trace and present the complex development of his artistic and personal obsessions and shows how he portrayed himself through a variety of mediums, including his private sketch books and a wide range of printing techniques as well as drawings and paintings. It includes a foreword by Helen Bellany, the artist’s wife, plus an essay and interview from exhibition curators’ Bill Hare and Sandy Moffat. Moffat’s account charts his long-term friendship and collaboration with Bellany, from their time at art school up until the latter’s death.

This event produced dramatic consequences at all levels of social life in the West, especially in the English-speaking context. Yet, due to its gigantic breadth and scope, the turn towards entertainment still begs for a detailed exploration. This book aims to deepen the analysis of this momentous transformation, engaging in particular with questions such as: what effects have been produced by performative and recreational practices (theatre, music, radio, serious and popular literature, comic strips) in the systemic evolution of cinema and television? Anomie Collections is a London-based initiative that supports the work of contemporary British painters by acquiring works on behalf of a group of private collectors. Since its inception in 2022, Anomie Collections has acquired eighty-six paintings and works on paper by thirteen artists.This publication, accompanying the second edition of scheme, documents the thirty works purchased for this iteration, along with newly commissioned texts by Kathryn Lloyd and an introduction by Matt Price, Publisher at Anomie Publishing and curator of the edition. The Arts & Crafts movement began as a backlash against industrialism and the prevailing stylistic ideals in mid-19th century Britain. The basic ideas of its followers, including the art critic John Ruskin and the artist William Morris, developed into a global movement, spreading through craft colonies and influencing professionals in several fields, from design and architecture to ornamentation and cultivation. The movement reached Sweden a few decades later and expressed itself as a romanticization of the simple life, tied to the home. One of the leading figures of the movement in Sweden is Carl Larsson, whose colorful paintings are known for depicting the simplicity of everyday life.In this book, twelve authors focus on the home environments, art schools, museums and other organizations where the ideals and visions were created, interpreted and developed. During the latter part of the nineteenth century, so-called esoteric movements became increasingly popular in cultural and intellectual circles in Europe, not least in Sweden. Secret teachings, rituals and practices in alchemy, astrology, occultism and theosophy were predominant, with a belief in correspondences in the cosmos, living nature and transmutations.But esotericism goes back much further in time in Swedish history. Although such esoteric ideas were long considered heresy by the Church and thus driven underground, they have had a significant impact on Swedish culture. In this anthology, we bring together some of Sweden’s foremost experts on the subject to explore the history of esotericism in Sweden and how its rituals, practices and traditions came to influence writers and artists such as August Strindberg, Selma Lagerlöf, Viktor Rydberg, Hilma af Klint, Tyra Kleen and Carl Milles.
