Chronology is the factual basis for contextualising archaeology. This collection of papers aims to integrate local chronogical schemes with more comprehensive and general "master" chronologies. The studies focus on Germanic or Germanised populations during and after the Roman Empire's fall in the West: the rich Germanic archaeological sites provide a yardstick for other areas. The authors also play close attention to terminology with definitions of major periods, sub-periods and artefact-types and to the relationship between typology and computerised quantitive and statistical techniques. The papers, all in English, cover North-West Europe, Denmark and Britain.

Even before the Mayflower sailed across the Atlantic in 1620, the material and cultural lives of the 'Old' and 'New' worlds were inextricably linked. This book reflects the techniques which archaeologists have used over the last 30 years to try and unravel, from a mass of material evidence, the lives of early Americans, and their English contemporaries. This book discusses the unique methodologies which historical archaeologists (in both Britain and the US) have developed to study early modern and industrial societies and new theoretical approaches focusing on ethnicity and domestic space, and new practical techniques using environmental as well as artifactual evidence. The book contains forty two essays arranged thematically. Five are concerned with the use and interpretation of evidence; thirteen describe settlements and their communities on both sides of the Atlantic; four are on nautical and military operations; thirteen are concerned with artefacts and pottery and their manufacture and distribution; and seven use environmental evidence to throw new light on the human populations, and the plant and animal worlds of the time.

Initially concerned exclusively with death and burial, this volume grew to encompass the role of the living and the towns they inhabit. The ten papers take an informal, relaxed tone, seeking to inspire discussion rather than provide a definitive summary. John Bradley's candid and witty "Urbanization in Early Medieval Ireland" stands out especially. He points out that history is not just about the past; it is very much about the present. (Spaces of the Living and the Dead) adeptly interweaves both, examining historical facts and our modern biases toward them.

Archaeology of Populus Monograph in Archaeology of Mediterranean Landscapes Series. Population trends and demographics in general are discussed through a variety of case studies based in Mediterranean Europe. The range of archaeological techniques and methods of analysis includes reginal field surveys, artefact scatter analysis, palaeoanthropology, historical and documentary sources, and studies of cemeteries.

A collection of short papers and abstracts from the 4th, 5th and 6th proceedings of the Osteological Research Group, held in April and November 1996 and June 1997. The papers cover a wide range of subjects including technical information, evidence derived from bone assemblages and specific individual examples. Studies are presented on archaeozoology, domesticated animal bone assemblages, evidence of violence and stress indicators, measurement and statistical analysis and current research in the field of osteoarchaeology.

While significant advances have been made in direct dating French and Spanish rock art, direct dates obtained by AMS for the New World are extremely scarce and existing stylistic hronologies cannot be trusted. These papers from the International Rock Art Congress held in Bolivia in 1997 focus in the dating problem. They also reflect discussion of the earliest art in the light of recent research and as seen from a world palaeo-art perspective.

The range of papers presented in this volume demonstrates the wide scope of Brian Hartley’s interests and the fields of archaeological scholarship with which he has been involved. It begins with studies on Roman Britain, particularly the military history, followed by papers on samian ware. Brian made a life-long study of, and was a leading international authority on, samian ware, a subject of vital importance for the chronology of Roman sites throughout Western Europe in the first two centuries AD. Papers on other types of Roman pottery and various classes of other finds relevant to the history and life of Roman Britain conclude the book.

Throughout history some areas have been less attractive for living and farming than others. These areas are identified as marginal because of environmental, economic or socio-political factors. How can we recognise marginality in the archaeological record? How particularly can environmental remains be interpreted? And how can we interpret human strategies when faced with a marginal environment? Most of the papers in this volume focus on Scottish contexts, reflecting their origins at the 1992 meeting of the Association for Environmental Archaeology in Edinburgh. However Greek pastoralism and the problems of food supply in the Egyptian and Syrian deserts are also examined.

Essays on recent developments and recent discoveries in Rock Art research around the world, based on the proceedings of the 1995 Rock Art conference held in Italy. This is the third in the five-yearly surveys of what is happening in rock art studies around the world, which builds upon the exciting contributions made in the first two volumes of this series. As always, the texts reflect something of the great differences in approach and emphasis that exist in different regions. The volume presents examples from Europe, Asia, Africa and the New Wrld. During the period in question, 2000 to 2004, there have been few major events, although in the field of Pleistocene art many new discoveries have been made, and new country added to the select list of those with Ice Age cave art. Some regions such as North Africa and the former USSR have seen a tremendous amount of activity, focusing not only on recording but also on chronology, and the accesible to the public is a theme of ever-growing importance, with some significant and interesting research undertaken on the impacts of visitors and how to measure and monitor those impacts. The research described in this book contributes to our ever increasing knowledge of this fascinating component of the human past.

This volume of the Dakhleh Oasis Project presents a first edition of the texts of three orations by or attributed to Isocrates ( Ad Demonicum , Ad Nicolem and the Nicocles ) as found in a new 4th century AD codex from Ismant el-Kharab in the Dahkleh Oasis (ancient Kellis). Isocrates himself lived in the 4th century BC; he was an Athenian orator who wrote many famous and influential speeches (although he never delivered them in public) which provide us with an extremely valuable commentary on the great political issues in the Greek world during the 4th century. This codex is immensely exciting as it is the earliest text of Isocrates ever to have been found. It was discovered lying in the sand on the floor of a house excavated in Kellis and consisted of nine wooden boards tied together with string, inscribed in Greek on both sides of each board. Members of the project believe that it was probably the copy of a local schoolmaster as the general quality of the handwriting and the spelling errors make it unlikely that it was owned by a refined scholar. Moreover the orations contained in the codex were popular for school reading in antiquity. This volume reproduces the text of the codex in full, together with commentary on selected passages and discussion of the discovery, date and purpose of the codex, codicological observations and a tabular comparison of variant readings. Thirty black and white photos of the codex allow us to get extremely close to this remarkable document and provide a good impression of its size, texture, construction and appearance.
