From 1987 to 1990, in collaboration with several Danish research institutes, the Tunisian Institut National de Patrimoine carried out an extensive archaeological survey in the valley known as the Segermes basin, in Tunisia. The results of that work are contained in three volumes entitled 'Africa Proconsularis' This volume reviews the information and looks at the historical conclusions.

Richard Hattatt's collection of brooches ranges from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages, though most were Roman and Romano-British. Between 1982 and 1989 he wrote four books illustrating all the brooches, and in the fourth book he included a visual catalogue which provides a quick guide to the types and dates. it is this visual index - with drawings of all 2000 brooches - that is reproduced.

This volume builds upon the copious and varied research on villa mosaics in Roman Britain and evaluates it within the context of elite social life in the 4th century AD. It argues that the mosaics were an integral part of the rich lifestyle of the elite in this period and played an important role in defining their status. Yet these symbols of power were apparently no longer valued to the same degree by the end of the 4th century. In a priod of increasing social and economic instability, the mosaics were one element in an elite lifestyle which was ultimately to prove socially diversive. In this wide-ranging study, Scott considers the significance and long-term impact of the artistic choices made by villa owners.

Southern Spain's archaeological record is a rich one but for the Roman period archaeological research has yielded limited results. The major settlement of Penaflor, the site of ancient Cleti, was selected for excavation for its good epigraphic and historical record and its excellent uncluttered stratigraphic sequence. The excavations aimed to establish, amongst other things, the date and cultural context for the first establishment of the site, the site'ss regional context and the Romanisation of the town during the late Republican period. This book, which is part of a wider programme of publication, is intended to provide an overview of the project as a whole but excludes some of the more detailed analyses and appendices which are accessible in a University of Southampton web page.

The rich numismatic collections of Turkish provincial museums are still relatively unknown and this volume presents for the first time the coinage in the museum of Amasya, which, under its ancient name of Amaseia, was one of the major centres of north-east Anatolia. In the Hellenistic period it was capital of the powerful kingdom of Pontus, while under the Roman empire it boasted the title of `Metropolis and First City' of its province. Over 4,500 coins held in the museum are catalogued, ranging in date from the 5th century BC until the 11th century AD. Most are finds from the surrounding region, so that there are rich holdings from the mints of Amaseia, Amisus, Sinope and Cappadcian Caesarea; but over 50 other mints in Asia Minor are represented and some coins come from as far afield as Alexandria in Egypt and Arles in Gaul.

Developing impressively in the Eastern regions of the then civilized world, where the strata of humankind were fertile in religious visions, Orthodoxy was to give shape and definition to its spiritual majesty through the thousand years of the Byzantine Empire, in order that it might live out its glory to the present day -a glory steeped in the blood of the Cross.

Thomas Ashby (1874-1931), the first scholar and third Director of the British School at Rome died at a tragically young age when he fell from a train. His 'Roman Campagna in Classical Times' remains a classic work of topographic research. This book, written by another former Director, tells the story of his life as an academic, as the Director responsible for building the British School at Rome in the Valle Giulia, as an ambulance driver in the First World War, as an avid photographer and, in the author's view, as the victim of the British tendency towards dark moral judgement.

This book contains thirteen papers on Roman archaeology from the tenth Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference in London. The TRAC conference was held in April 2000, at the Institute of Archaeology and was divided into five different sessions. In the opening session, Representing Romans, the methodology of portraying the Romans to the wider world was explored. David Clarke andFraser Hunter’s paper outlines the challenge of designing appropiate gallery displays for the new National Museum of Scotland. In his paper, Francis Grew discusses the development of Roman London. Garrick Fincham’s paper discusses the threat of overwhelming military intervention by the imperial power in colonial negotiations. Issues of ethnicity, gender, class and occupation within the later Roman army are addressed here. Miranda Green’s paper presents an important discussion of the nature of human/stag hybrids in Iron Age and Gallo-Roman iconography, and Gillian Hawkes presents an analysis of food procurement and preparation encountered in Roman Britain. Gilly Carr considers the role of body decoration and grooming, arguing that individuals in different areas of south eastern Roman Britain made different cultural choices to structure their ethnic identities. The final set of papers focused on Constructing Childhood in the Roman World, reconsidering some long-standing truisms regarding the status and treatment of children in the Roman context. John Pearce examines Roman infant burial and the role religion plays in burial ceremony.

A basic introduction to Greek Drama, aimed primarily at A-level students, and comprised of edited essays by leading scholars on a spectrum of themes connected to the subject, including origins, performance practises, the use of the chorus and the nature and meaning of tragedy and comedy.

The initial occupation of the site dates from the Middle Iron Age, represented by pottery and a single building. In the Late Iron Age an enclosure containing a small building was constructed. During the Conquest period a larger triple-ditched defensive enclosure with a central roundhouse was constructed to the south-east of the initial enclosure. The ditches were rapidly backfilled but the site continued in use as a farmstead until the late 3rd or early 4th century. Throughout the Romano-British period the enclosure boundaries were altered, and new buildings added. By the late 1st century the roundhouse had been replaced by an aisled domestic building, this in turn being replaced in the 3rd century by a second aisled building. In the mid 3rd century, four pottery kilns producing coarseware were constructed within the enclosure. Occupation of the site in the Early Saxon period is evidenced by five sunken-featured buildings. The archaeological features were well preserved and detailed post-excavation work has identified c.50 structures, including several previously unrecognised types of building. Large quantities of ceramic finds related to the Romano-British pottery kilns were recovered, as well as Late Iron Age and Saxon assemblages. Notable among the finds is a group of Late Iron Age spearheads associated with the backfill of the defensive enclosure.
