A new edition of the Augustan poet Albius Tibullus and a major commentary by Robert Maltby, the first in English since K F Smith (1913) to treat Tibullus' entire oeuvre within a single cover. It takes full account of up-to-date scholarship on this learned, elegant and, until recently, much underestimated poet. The text is based on that of A G Lee (1990), variations from which are listed at the end and discussed in the notes. The Introduction includes a short history of the text and an assessment of recent Tibullan scholarship with a complete alphabetical listing of bibliography on the Corpus Tibullianum for the years 1970-2000. The ancient testimonia are quoted in full and there are sections on Tibullus' life and times, his relations with his patron, and Augustan themes in his work. The literary significance of Tibullus' mistresses and the other characters in his elegies, together with the structure, style and metre of Books I and II and their links with contemporary literature, are all clearly and succinctly reviewed. The detailed comment on each poem is preceded by an introductory essay.

In its first three centuries the Roman Empire expanded politically at the same time as Greek culture was enjoying its heyday. This not only created tensions but also many productive impulses, which were mirrored in different branches of cultural life. In this collection of papers an assembled team of international scholars from the fields of philosophy, history of ideas, literature, epigraphy, archaeology and history explores the intercultural aspects of that thriving period. Lisa Nevett's paper "Continuity and change in Greek households under Roman rule - the role of women in the domestic context" looks at the extent to which individual households and especially attitudes to women changed under Roman control. her evidence of patterns of social behaviour is archaeological and she concludes that a relaxation of restrictions on women took place from the later Hellenistic period onwards and therefore was a development which had begun prior to the arrival of the Romans. Paolo Desideri surveys Greek historiographical literature of the second century AD to find a key to Greek mentality and political ideology in the late Roman Empire. The Greeks did not have to give up their civilisation and identity; Appian and Cassius Dio even created the idea of a Hellenistic rather than a Roman Empire. Philip Stadter in "Plutarch's Lives and their Roman Readers" argues that Plutarch in "Lives is counselling the elite class of the Roman Empire, and that Tiberius Gracchus in particular would have provided a useful lesson, e.g. for the emperor Hadrian. Ewen Bowie explores the literary tales of Hadrian in Latin and particularly Greek poetry, including ancient sources for his preferences, his own compositions and some of the poems composed by the friends of ministers. Hadrian seems to have preferred Antimaches over Homer, admired Archilochus, Parthenius and short polymetric compositions.

This is the second volume of the complete publication of Panskoye I, a short-lived Greek rural site in Northwestern Crimea dating from the period c. 400-270 BC. The settlement was founded by Olbia, the most important Greek city on the northern shores of the Black Sea. Half a century later the fortress was destroyed and the settlement taken over by another Greek city, Tauric Chersonesos. From then on and until its final destruction it formed part of the chora (territory) of this city. Both the necropolis and settlement provide invaluable archaeological information thanks to the unique combination of a very precise date with rich finds of the material culture such as pottery, metals, sculptures, coins, inscriptions, etc, as well as anthropological data allowing the paleodemographic reconstructions.

This is the first volume of the complete publication of Panskoye I, a rural settlement in North-western Crimea dating from the period c. 400-270BC. The settlement was founded by Olbia, the most important Greek city on the northern shores of the Black Sea. This volume published research results about a monumental building (U6) which was erected after the take-over by Chersonesos and details on the very varied and rich finds from the building. The volume encompasses detailed studies of the architecture and layout of the building, of a large number of finds such as sculpture, pottery, lamps, terracottas, coins, metal-, stone-, and glass objects and graffiti. Included also are the results of a number of scientific studies, such as geological, palaeobotanical and petrographic analyses. An introduction presents the large-scale survey of North-western Crimea which began in 1959 and of which the excavations of Panskoye I (1964-94) form a central part. This publication offers an insight into two important issues in ancient history and classical archaeology, a Greek city's exploitation of its territory and of the interaction between Greek settlers and all local tribes, in this case the Scythians and the Taurians. The volume is the first of three. Volume 2 will deal with the necropolis of the settlement, and volume 3 with the earliest fortress.

The vast Castellani collection of ancient Greek pottery, now housed in the Villa Giulia Museum in Rome, has been studied by several scholars, notably Paolo Mingazzini who published part of the collection. A great deal, however, especially fragments and fragmentary pieces, remains unpublished. The aim of the publication of the Athenian Black Figure fragments is to make this important material available to all students of Greek pottery. Each piece in the publication is illustrated and described. There are a number of important pieces among them, and the fragments as a whole add to the knowledge of Athenian Black Figure pottery since the picture is distorted without them. The first volume by Lise Hannestad dealt with cups: kylikes, skyphoi, kyathoi, and mastoids. The second volume emphasises the closed vessels: amphorae, jugs, lekythoi, hydriai, craters, and dinoi.

Truncated remains of an extensive settlement dating from the mid-first to the late second century survived beneath the modern ploughsoil at Snettisham. The Romano-British settlement was based on a mixed economy of farming and low intensity industry and demonstrated the survival of traditional techniques of house construction, and the continued importance of handmade pottery well into the Roman period. The excavation produced a useful pottery assemblage which complements other groups from the Saxon Shore Fort at Brancaster, and a number of Fenland sites. A decline in valley floor activity occurred at approximately the same time as construction of a villa on higher ground to the east, and it is possible that environmental changes in the Fenland region during the third century resulted in a shift of settlement to the east. This eastern focus persisted in the Saxon and medieval periods, and no evidence was found for intensive post-Roman use of the excavated area.

In this useful contribution to a subject of growing importance in contemporary classical studies, Andreas Michalopoulos has collected around 200 etymologies and etymological complexes in Ovid's Metamorphoses . These are listed with brief contextual information, evidence for the etymology from ancient grammarians, discussion of the artistic function of the wordplay, and examples of its use in other works of Ovid and in other Latin poets. The introduction sets out a conceptual framework and succinctly describes etymological techniques particularly typical of (although not unique to) Ovid. As well as adding to the corpus of etymological reference works, this study will increase appreciation both of Ovid's learning and of his wit.

This sequel to the Archaic and Classical volumes publishes almost 1,000 Hellenistic terracottas, each of which is illustrated and described in full. Arranged geographically, most of the Mediterranean is represented, excluding Egypt, southern Italy and Sicily, with each figure presented in the area where it was probably produced. Each regional section is introduced with a discussion of the area's findspots and history and technical data is presented in appendices. The general introduction outlines general questions of the evolution of artistic styles, techniques and functions of Hellenistic terracottas. The black and white plates illustrate every example, while the colour plates offer a representative selection of the range of clays found in the terracottas presented here and also of the coloured pigments used in their decoration.

Gustav Friedrich Klemm was a 19th century scholar and collector of antiquities. Part of his collection which was purchased by the British Musuem in 1868, forms the subject for this book. It largely comprises a catalogue of material from the Old Germanic Confederation, with objects dating from the Neolithic to post-Medieval period. The catalogue is preceded by a discussion of the cultural and historical context of the objects and of the collection as a whole, along with some new analyses of items and comments on provenance and chronology. An important reference source since much of this material has not been properly published until now.

A detailed excavation report on the Shipton Mallet site excavated on the edge of the Mendip Hills in 1990. This presentation and interpretation of the information recorded by the Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit reveals an important Romano-British roadside settlement that grew up towards the end of the 1st century AD, developed during the 2nd to 4th century AD, going into decline in the 5th century. This report looks at the sequence of the site, its buildings, structures, burials, its dating sequence, function and status as a settlement, trade and its regional context. Other sections report on the pottery finds, small finds, coins, building materials, human and animal remains.

The University Orator's job is to create formal presentations, in Latin, to mark historic moments in academic life or, most commonly, to present the honorary degrees which Oxford periodically awards to leading international figures. The distinguished Classical scholar Godfrey Bond, who held the post of Orator between 1980 and 1992, was a master at creating concise biographical portraits in clear, beautifully-constructed Latin. This book contains a collection of his addresses to famous figures, including Kiri te Kanawa, Cardinal Basil Hume, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Prince Naruhito of Japan, Joseph Brodsky and Sir Vidia Naipaul. In all of these elegant orations, the charm and the wit of the man who translated jumbo jets as balanenae ballistariae (`catapulted whales') shines through.

The 22nd British Museum Classical Colloquium, held in December 1998, was dedicated to the memory of the late Professor Olivier Masson. Throughout his long career his over-riding enthusiasm was in the study of the archaeological heritage of Cyprus, in particular through the collection of the British Museum. Contributors, from Europe and America, write about the major sites, the convictions and motives of those who investigated them, the political background, the movement of antiquities to major European museums and the ensuing rivalry between these institutions. The discussions show that we can, and indeed must, learn from the triumphs and the mistakes of the 19th century with regard to how we study, exploit and preserve a country's archaeological heritage. The book is a major contribution to the historiography of Cypriot studies.

The results of recent archaeological excavation, systematic rural survey and detailed studies of pottery distributions have revealed the extent and complexities of the economy in the eastern empire. The eight papers in this volume demonstrate this complexity and prosperity, examining several types of product and how the economy evolved over time.

The Greek city of Nikopolis was founded by Octavian (later known as the Emperor Augustus) after his victory in the naval battle of nearby Actium in 31 BC. The city was a result of a so-called synoecism, i.e. , the inhabitants of numerous Greek cities in the region (Epirus, Acharnania and Aetolia) were forced to leave their former dwellings and establish themselves in the newly built city, which became the capital of the coastal region. Since 1987 a joint Greek-American archaeological and geological Nikopolis project has registered, conserved and restored monuments inside and outside the city and conducted a survey of Southern Epirus aiming at understanding the changing relationship between humans and landscap
