The Upper Thames Valley is an important area for prehistoric monuments and has one of the highest concentrations of cursuses, distinctive linear or elongated earthworks, in Britain. In the 1980s the Oxford Archaeological Unit along with the Abingdon Area Archaeological and Historical Society had the opportunity to extensively investigate one of these sites at Drayton. This site has produced many significant results for our present understanding of the date, construction and use of cursus monuments on the lowland river gravels of Britain. This volume reports on the excavations at Drayton, and includes an account of small-scale excavations undertaken at the Lechlade cursus by OAU and Lance and Faith Vatcher. It also provides a gazetteer of known cursus monuments in the Upper Thames Valley.

From sewn planked boats in Early Dynastic Egypt to Late Roman wrecks in Italy, and the design of Venetian Merchant Galleys, this huge volume gathers together fifty-three papers presenting new research on the archaeology and history of ancient ships and shipbuilding traditions. The papers have been grouped into several thematic sections, including: ships of the Mediterranean; the reconstruction of ancient ships, from life-size reconstructions to computer models; the study of shipyards, shipsheds and slipways of the Mediterranean and Europe; Venetian Galleys of the 15th and 16th centuries; and North European medieval and post -medieval ships. These papers which were presented at the Ninth International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology (ISBSA), held in Venice 2000. Carlo Beltrame is a free-lance archaeologist and contract professor of Maritime archaeology at Università Ca' Foscari of Venice and of Naval archaeology at Universita della Tuscia of Viterbo. He specialises in the archaeology of ship-construction from antiquity until the Renaissance period and methodology in maritime archaeology.

From archaeological field work to heritage organisations and museums, increasingly CAD files and three-dimensional CAD models comprise a unique component of our digital archives - and one which it may not be possible to reproduce on paper. This Guide offers a basic description of computer-aided drafting or computer-aided design (CAD) software, discussions on the use of CAD in a variety of situations, descriptions of data acquisition methods including field survey and direct object scanning, and good practices in the use of the software. As well as providing a source of useful generic information, the guide emphasises the processes of long-term preservation, archiving, and effective data re-use. An important aim of the Guide is to introduce practitioners to areas and issues for which applicable standards and frameworks already exist and to identify the relevant sources of information that may be consulted.

Raised to honour Maussolos, a Persian satrap of the 4th century BCE, the Maussolleion in Halikarnassos was renowned throughout the ancient world as one of its Seven Wonders. Pliny the Elder provided a useful description of it several centuries later, but another fourteen passed before the invention of moveable type made his observations available to a wider public. In Volume 5, Jeppesen tries to reconcile Pliny's account of the superstructure with recent archaeological finds. The passage in Pliny's Natural History has been corrupted by untold generations of copyists, and reconstructions have focused on producing a grammatically acceptable text, with little regard for consistency and sense. Jeppesen compares variant readings from the 58 known manuscripts and proposes a model that tallies with the new archaeological evidence. The volume concludes with a survey of the architectural fragments held by the British Museum and the Maussolleion Museum in Bodrum.

This volume is a study of selected ceramic finds from the Maussolleion site and the first major publication on Karian pottery since 1965. From a body of 120,000 items, the authors have emphasised in situ contexts related to the construction of the Maussolleion, and representative items from the large body of Hellenistic material.

The latest in a series of reports on the archaeological excavations near London Bridge Station, this volume focuses on important discoveries relating to the origins and development of Roman Southwark. From the prehistoric period on this area formed the northernmost end of a series of sandy islands in the tidal reaches of the Thames. The earliest Roman features were drainage ditches and quarry pits associated with the construction of a road to the Thames bridgehead. Eight buildings were recorded along the eastern side of the road, including a blacksmiths' workshop. All of these buildings were destroyed by fire in the Boudican revolt of AD 60/61. New timber and masonry buildings were constructed in the area during the late 1st and 2nd centuries. These included shops, a market hall, and a warehouse. Excavations revealed that extensive land reclamation took place on the marginal eastern fringes of the island before the construction of 2nd and 3rd century houses. One of these houses contained a mosaic, and painted wall plaster was recorded to the west of the road with part of a large building interpreted as a mansio .

Sir Aurel Stein (1862-1943) is renowned for his archaeological expeditions to Central Asia, India, Iran, Iraq and Jordan. The mass of books and correspondence that he collected during his lifetime are distributed among collections in Britain and his homeland of Hungary. Within the collection bequeathed to the Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences is a unique source of material including photographs, letters, documents, manuscripts, articles, offprints and reviews within the subjects of Indology, Iranian studies, Central Asian linguistics and archaeology and Oriental manuscripts. This important collection is discussed and presented here.

The Norwich Survey was established in 1971 to examine and record the city's archaeology. This, part three in the series of reports, looks at five excavations within and around Norwich: Northern Conesford (Cathedral Close), Castle Fee in South Conesford, Westwick (St Benedicts Street), North-east Norwich (Magdalen Street) and the suburb of Heigham. The data from these excavations improve our understanding of changes to the city in the medieval and post-medieval periods.

This volume discusses and catalogues all examples of armorial devices from horse furniture known from the Norfolk SMR. In what is a vaulable reference tool for archaeologists and military historians alike, the volume presents all manner of 12th- to 14th-century pendants, studs, mounts and badges which depict geometric patterns, animals, buildings, plants, humans, monsters and everyday items. Fine line drawings illustrate 246 objects. The volume includes a glossary of technical and decorative terms.

The enigmatic remains of Baconsthorpe Castle in north-east Norfolk belie the story of a very grand fortified manor house. Owned by the Heydon family from the early 15th to the late 17th century, the house once comprised an inner moated enclosure, an outer court and gatehouse, a barn, mere and gardens and park. This report outlines the history of Baconsthorpe based on documentary and iconographic evidence, and archaeological investigations of the 1950s and, especially, the excavations of 1972. As well as an analysis of the standing remains and earthworks, this volume presents the artefactual evidence, including ceramics, metal objects, coins, glass, building material, sculpted stone, evidence for leatherworking and zoological remains.

The Islamic city of Surt was, even at its peak during the middle and second half of the tenth century AD, a modest settlement. It was, however, a prosperous city, a commercial centre. In addition, it was a military staging place for the Fatimid invasion of Egypt. Volume includes an Arabic summary and a foldout plan of the site. Excavations were carried out between 1977 and 1981 which uncovered the heart of the town with its mosque and workshops. In archaeological terms, North Africa in the early medieval period is almost entirely unknown. This excavation report goes some way to shedding light on the subject and so is most welcome.

This volume details Jan Zahle's investigations of subterranean structures close to the Maussolleion. Successive spoilations -- including Newton's -- have greatly muddled the archaeological record, and the Danish excavations uncovered evidence of another complication: plans for the site appear to have changed during construction, so what was originally intended as a modest extension of the existing structures evolves into a huge tomb on an immense terrace. Zahle's thorough sifting of evidence resolves many contradictions, though uncertainties still remain.

This volume presents the results of four excavations, three in Norfolk (Tilney St Lawrence, Nordelph and Downham West) and one in Lincolnshire (Morton), of Romano-British routeways constructed some time before the 3rd century AD. Data from the sites, which comprise canals, roads and especially the Fen Causeway crossing the southern Fenlands, are discussed in turn and the final chapter draws some more general conclusion as to their function, chronological sequence and their roe in the development of the area in Roman times.

The future of London archaeology is the focus of this volume, which follows on from The Archaeology of Greater London (MoLAS 2000). It sets out aims for improving and facilitating research and managing the archaeological resource more effectively. What will be useful for non-specialists are the summaries and reviews of the evidence for the main chronological periods; Prehistory, Roman, Saxon, Medieval and post 1500. A final chapter considers how a research strategy for London can be developed.

Performing arts' covers a vast range of interests and skills, involving as it does designers, directors, actors and performers, musicians, critics, technicians, analysts, administrators, theorists. A central tenet of this Guide is to encourage professionals in the performing arts to consider some of the advantages that digital resources may now offer. It is noticeably different from its predecessors in the series. Not so much a manual of 'how to do it' it is primarily intended to encourage you to use the available technology in the first place. All the contributors have directed successful projects involving various aspects of digital resources related to the performing arts. In some instances it was for documentation purposes, in some for teaching purposes, in some for research purposes, in some for all three. The guide includes a comprehensive glossary of terminology.
